Happy Monday! Hope those of you that celebrate Easter and Passover enjoyed some time with your family and friends over the past few days. We definitely did, which is why this is a light version of The What this week. We’ll be back next week with more reporting, but for now let’s see what’s happening around the region this week.

ICYMI: Here’s the latest on the work taking place to replace the nearly 130-year-old Walk Bridge which crosses the Norwalk Harbor and carries hundreds of thousands of people each day on Metro North and Amtrak trains. The massive effort to replace the bridge, which began over a decade ago, has picked up steam with more visible construction efforts underway

This Week at a Glance

This section aims to highlight the most important meetings and news taking place each week. 

  • In Bridgeport, the Budget & Appropriations Committee is hosting three budget related meetings this week—Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m., the committee will review the public facilities budget, while on Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m., the committee will review the fire department, finance department, and Board of Education budgets and potentially hold a vote on the city’s capital budget.
  • In Stamford, the Planning Board will meet on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. and host a public hearing on the capital budget. The board will also review a request from the Zoning Board for a university zone text change that aims to “promote higher education and cultural institutions; encourage affordable housing for students, faculty and staff; allow for faculty, students and staff to live in the vicinity of their work; promote uses that complement the needs of higher education and cultural institutions; improve multimodal access and create a more pedestrian-oriented environment.”
  • However, two committees of the Board of Representatives—the Housing/Community Development/Social Services Committee on Monday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. and the Land Use/Urban Redevelopment Committee on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.—are also reviewing the plans for a university zone and related efforts to convert 1201 Washington Boulevard into a residence hall for UCONN students and how that would impact current residents. 
  • Also in Stamford, there’s two 2035 Action Workshops taking place this week, where “participants will have the opportunity to map and prioritize draft planning strategies and actions for their areas, directly influencing the draft Stamford 2035 plan.” The first will be on Monday, April 21 for North Stamford, Westover, and Turn-of-River-Newfield at 5:30 p.m., and the second will take place on Wednesday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m. for the Cove, East Side, and Shippan neighborhoods.
  • In Norwalk, the Ad Hoc Affordable Housing Committee will meet on Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m. and review the next steps for the city’s affordable housing plan.
  • In Fairfield, the Town Plan and Zoning Commission will meet on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. and continue its review of a plan for 441 Post Road that would bring a mixed use hotel and residential development to the property. 
  • Also in Fairfield, there will be a public meeting on Roadway Improvements for Route 59 and Stratfield Road on Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m., where residents can share their thoughts and learn about proposed improvements along the road, especially from Church Hill to Collinwood Avenue, and at the intersection of Wilson and Church Hill Road.
  • In Greenwich, on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., there will be a Public Meeting for the Byram River Project. to discuss plans for removing and replacing the two Route 1 Bridges in the Village of Port Chester, New York that connect into town.
  • In Westport, there will be a Parks Master Plan Public Workshop on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. where residents can engage with the consultants working on the parks plan, offer feedback, and learn more about the planning process.
