Happy Monday! Back to school is inching closer, but there’s still a few weeks left to soak in summer. (We’re taking some time off next week and I cannot wait.) But before we get to that, let’s take a look at what’s happening around the region. 

Highlights

The Wall Street area has always been an important hub in the city of Norwalk. And now it’s undergoing a major transformation, fueled by millions in private and public investment. Thanks to new businesses, new housing, and new infrastructure, “Wall Street is on the rise,” as one of the many murals along the corridor states. 

But it wasn’t an easy road to get to this point, and it hasn’t been without some setbacks. 

The area is home to some of the city’s major institutions, like the main library, post office, bus depot, and—at the end of it—the Norwalk Green. It was the commercial hub of the city for decades, and has been home to everything from name brands like Sears to local businesses, like Kiddie Town. 

However, in 1955, a flood tore through the area and decimated many of the buildings along the Norwalk River. Since then, efforts to revitalize the area have come and gone, with bouts of success and some failures. 

Recently, however, new organizations like the Norwalk Conservatory of the Arts and the revitalized District Music Hall (formerly known as the Wall Street Theater), along with new businesses have all helped bring people to the area. In addition, new housing developments are underway, which business owners hope will bring even more customers to the area. And a $30 million project to invest in public infrastructure in the area aims to make it easier for people to get around. 

In fact the city dubbed 2024 “the year of Wall Street” as that’s when investments began really taking off in the area and have continued since. 

So with that being said, let's explore what’s happening on Wall Street.

Bridgeport

Featured Meeting: The Board of Education will meet on Monday, August 10 at 6 p.m. to discuss and potentially take action on increasing the salary for Interim Superintendent Royce Avery, among other items.

Stamford

Featured Meeting: The Board of Finance will meet on Wednesday, August 12 at 7 p.m. and review multiple items, including: hearing updates on the Westhill and Roxbury school construction projects; authorizing additional funding for the Roxbury project to reflect the 60% reimbursement rate for the project from the state; and voting on appropriating funding for the rehabilitation of the West Broad Street Road Bridge.  

Norwalk

Featured Meeting: The City Council will meet on Tuesday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. to review and vote on multiple items including authorizing almost $500,000 (most of which is grant funded) for a safety action plan, and increasing the funding for the Norwalk High School project in an additional amount not to exceed $6,987,066. 

Fairfield

Featured Meeting: The Town Plan and Zoning Commission will meet on Tuesday, August 11 at 6:30 p.m. and review multiple applications including a proposal for a “day nursery use” at Post Road and Kings Highway and a proposal to demolish two existing commercial buildings at Black Rock Turnpike and Stillson Road and replace them with two three-story commercial ones.

Greenwich

Featured Meeting: No featured meeting this week.

Darien 

Featured Meeting: The Board of Selectmen will meet on Monday, August 10 at 7 p.m. and hear an update on the proposed 10-year master plan. 

  • Monday, August 10: Board of Selectmen at 7 p.m. 
  • Tuesday, August 11: Sewer Commission at 4:30 p.m. 
  • Wednesday, August 12: Advisory Committee on Sustainability at 12:15 p.m. 

Westport

Featured Meeting: The Affordable Housing Committee will meet on Tuesday, August 11 at 3 p.m. and discuss the development of affordable housing in town and how the town is working to implement some of the new requirements in the landmark housing bill that was signed into law last session.
