Monday, September 9

Happy Monday! If you scroll down and take a quick look at all the meetings and programming scheduled this week across southwest Connecticut, you'll see that summer is officially over and there’s **a lot** happening, so let’s dive right in.

Highlights

This section will give a brief overview of the key items in the newsletter.

Spotlight

This section will feature our main reporting each week.

Southwest Connecticut residents are served by five hospitals—Greenwich Hospital, Stamford Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, and St. Vincent’s Medical Center—which provide a range of services from labor and delivery to cardiac care to community health programs.

But with a major proposed merger on the way and applications to grow and evolve some services across the many providers, how the hospitals look today could be very different in a few years. Those changes include:

  • A proposed merger between Nuvance Health and Northwell Health. (Nuvance Health owns Norwalk Hospital in our region.)
  • New plans to expand patient services at Norwalk Hospital
  • A request to add operating rooms at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport

Learn more about these changes and how they could affect our region. You can also check out our video of the highlights.

This Week at a Glance

This section aims to highlight the most important meetings and news taking place each week.

  • In Stamford, Mayor Caroline Simmons invites residents to attend a Community Town Hall: A conversation on the rise of antisemitism on Thursday, September 12 at 7 p.m. The event will feature Simmons, along with Stamford Superintendent of Schools Tamu Lucero and Stamford Police Lieutenant Jerry Junes at the Stamford JCC. Panelists will discuss “how the City of Stamford is responding to the rise of antisemitism and hate crimes,” at the event which is hosted by the United Jewish Federation of Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien.
  • Also in Stamford, the Board of Finance has a packed agenda on Thursday, September 12 at 7 p.m. Some of the board’s discussions and votes will include: approving a portion of Garden Street (between Dock Street and Manhattan Street) to be discontinued to “enable development of the combined parcel, which is a block from the Stamford Transportation Center;” hiring consultants for work on the new Roxbury K-8 Elementary School; approving funding for a Cove-East Side Neighborhood Plan; and voting on various transportation improvement projects including a Westside Pedestrian Safety Project and sidewalks on Long Ridge Road.
  • In Norwalk,  there will be a public information meeting held by CTDOT on Proposed Improvements on Route 7 on Tuesday, September 10 at 6 p.m. at Cranbury Elementary School. The purpose of the project, which does not yet have funding, is to improve mobility for all roadway users and reduce congestion-related crashes along U.S. Route 7 from Grist Mill Road to Kent Road in the City of Norwalk and Town of Wilton. Residents are invited to weigh in on the proposal.
  • In Fairfield, the Town Plan and Zoning Commission will meet on Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. and review a proposal to establish a daycare at 161 Hillside Road.
  • Also in Fairfield, the Police Commission will meet on Wednesday, September 11 at 4:30 p.m. and review a few traffic safety items including voting on a proposed Roundabout at the intersection of Redding Road and Dunham as well as to change the intersection of Adley Road and Lloyd Place from a wide Y Intersection to a “T” intersection. The recommended approach would be to install stop signs on all approaches.
  • In Bridgeport, the Budget and Appropriations Committee will meet on Monday, September 9 at 6 p.m. and review how the city plans to allocate its final American Rescue Plan Act Program (ARPA) funds.
  • In Greenwich, there will be a Citizens Police Advisory Committee Public Open Forum on Tuesday, September 10 at 7 p.m. to allow citizens to raise any questions or concerns to the committee.
