Happy Monday and happy first week of October! There’s a lot happening in the school construction world this week, so let’s dive in.

Highlights

This section gives a brief overview of the key items in the newsletter.

Spotlight

This section features our main reporting each week.

Schools across southwest Connecticut have long and expensive lists of needs. Rundown HVAC units, overcrowded outdated classrooms, malfunctioning infrastructure and accessibility issues are just a few of the challenges our schools face.

According to facilities plans from across the region, there are more than an estimated $2.5 billion worth of improvements that are needed at school buildings over the next decade or two.

Across southwest Connecticut, schools are working to address these needs. We’ll have a more detailed analysis next week of some of the plans and proposals, but we wanted to share important meetings taking place this week related to school construction across the region. These include:

  • In Bridgeport, the Education & Social Services Committee will host an informational meeting on Wednesday, October 8 at 6 p.m. featuring interim superintendent Royce Avery and Jennifer Perez, chair of Board of Education to discuss the recently opened Bassick High School.
  • In Norwalk, there will be a West Rocks School Construction Town Hall on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. to share more details about the proposed plans for the construction of a new West Rocks Middle School.
  • In Fairfield, the Board of Finance will meet on Monday, October 6 at 7 p.m. and hear a presentation on the Timothy Dwight Elementary School replacement and Early Childhood Center project.
  • In Westport, the Board of Finance will meet on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. and receive a status update on the Long Lots Elementary School project.
