Commuters got their first look inside the new Greenwich train station this week which opened on January 30 after months of renovations.

The new station aims to “enhance access and improve the experience for anyone using the train station,” according to a statement from First Selectman Fred Camillo.

The work included a new exterior, improved train platforms and access to them, new pedestrian pathways, and new sidewalks and curbs from the Arch Street railroad bridge to the Steamboat Road railroad bridge. Inside the station, there’s upgraded lighting, new restrooms, ceiling, and flooring, and glass facades.

Camillo noted the opening was especially welcome as “people using the station can wait comfortably inside for the train and get out of the freezing cold, which is something we know residents are VERY eager to be able to do.”

The work is part of a $30 million upgrade to the station and area around it, as we previously covered. The project is funded by the Ashforth Company, which owns the station and area around it.

While the station itself is open, construction is continuing in the area as part of the overall “Greenwich Crossing” project. That work includes a new 5,000-square-foot “anchor” restaurant, improved building facades, and landscaping improvements. That work is expected to continue into spring.

“It is going to enhance our downtown and my congratulations go out to Ashforth for completion of this much-needed phase of the project,” Camillo said.

The Greenwich station isn’t the only one in our area undergoing major renovations. You can explore others through our All Aboard series.
